Kiteboarding is one of the fastest growing sports in the world. It attracts people of all ages and backgrounds. Slicing through the water with the power of the wind provides a sense of freedom and independence that is hard to match.
At Flamingo Kitesurf School in Playa Copal in Costa Rica, the best wind conditions and natural beauty make the perfect place for you to get started. Kitesurfing is a sport for everybody! Learning is easy, safe and fun as long as you go with an experienced school like ours with professional instructors.
We offer lessons with a personal approach. All our instructors speak English, are certified and experienced.
OUR EQUIPMENT: We care about your safety. Therefore we use new North 2024 kites in top condition and all the necessary safety gear for your lessons.
RENTALS: We will rent equipment to riders that are able to ride upwind consistently. We will ask for your passport as a deposit.
Rental Gear is $80 / 1 day ($60 for the kite + $20 for the board)

1 or 2 days "Introduction" Packages
Spend one or two amazing days with us at the beach learning some safety basics and kite flying techniques. You may also get into the water to fly the kite and do some body drags. Each day is 3h of lessons. Take a look at the Lessons Program for more info.

3 days "Beginner Basics” Package (9h)
A nine-hour package is the minimum required to get a complete introduction to the basics of kiteboarding in a safe and fun manner! Typically, you can expect to try some waterstarts with the board by the 3rd lesson. Look at the Lessons Program for more info.

4 days “Zero to Hero” Package (12h)
This package is the one we recommend for a smooth introduction to the sport with uninterrupted progress! The package covers everything in the “Beginner Basics” package plus:
• more time to perfect your waterstarts• begin riding upwind
• improve riding position and comfort
• become more confident and independent in the water

Lessons Program

Theory: Understanding wind concepts, assessing the spots, wind window, safety protocols, learning process and special communication.
Equipment set up: Intro to the kite equipment and how to safely set up to launch.
Launching and landing a kite: Learn to launch and land with an assistant.
Kite control: Properly controlling the kite with the bar with one or two hands. Adjusting the power and de-power of the kite.
Use of safety systems: Understanding their purpose, in incremental steps including the quick release and self rescue.
Body drag: using your body to sail with the kite in the water.

Re-launch: Understanding different situations and procedures to relaunch the kite from the water safely.
Board Recovery: improving your body drag technique to recover your board.
Eight figure: continuously moving the kite at the edge of the wind window to generate power.

Assisted launching: practice launching and landing the kite with assistance.
Water start stroke: practicing the initial power stroke with the kite only.
Body drag with the board: one hand on the bar, the other on the board.
Board positioning: getting the board on your feet while keeping the kite in control.
Water start: put everything you learned into action to stand up on the board!

Our kite school is open from November until April.
Courses are available as private (1 student per instructor) or group (2 students per instructor). A “basic” course will last 3 to 4 days. To become an “independent” kite sailor usually requires more practice and lessons.
Lessons are offered in English and Spanish.
